Professional Background

Dr. Joe Sutherland is an entrepreneurial digital and analytics executive with extensive experience in strategy, technology, marketing, and operations. He serves as the Director of Customer Experience Insights & Growth for Cisco. Prior to joining Cisco, he served as Practice Lead at Search Discovery, where he led groundbreaking digital transformation, analytics, and marketing initiatives for a portfolio of widely admired Fortune 500 companies. From 2011–2013, he served at The White House under the Obama Administration in digital and operational roles supporting the day-to-day movements and schedule of the President.

After three exits ($XXM), he has reliably demonstrated how to launch new digital businesses and deliver customer centric solutions via online, mobile, and social channels. He was a founder at the artificial intelligence startup Peachtree AI, and a founding team member at the fintech startup Prattle, both of which successfully exited through acquisition. Prior to that, he worked as a freelance analytics consultant. He has held research appointments at Columbia, Johns Hopkins, and Princeton.

Joe contributes as an Adjunct Professor for Emory’s Quantitative Theory & Methods (QTM) program and is a member of the advisory boards for Balto and Mentor Collective. He was previously a member of the Undergraduate Experience Committee for the Board of Trustees of Washington University in St. Louis. He holds a Ph.D., M.Phil., and Master’s from Columbia, and a Bachelor’s from Washington University in St. Louis. In his free time, Joe enjoys golf, tennis, and spending time with his family.
