Professional Background
Dr. Joe Sutherland is a senior technology executive with extensive cross-functional experience in strategy, operations, marketing, product, and engineering. He is responsible for AdTech business ventures at Amazon. Prior to joining Amazon, he worked as an executive at Cisco, and before that, as a management consultant, leading mass-scale digital transformation initiatives for a portfolio of widely admired Fortune 500s, including Coca-Cola, GlaxoSmithKline, JPMorganChase, and Goldman Sachs. From 2011–2013, he served at The White House in the Obama Administration. Sutherland’s work in politics, economics, and technology has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Financial Times, Bloomberg, Quartz, and TechCrunch.
After building and selling two companies in the technology and professional services spaces ($XXM), he has reliably demonstrated how to launch new businesses and deliver customer centric solutions via online, mobile, and social channels. He was a founder at the artificial intelligence startup Peachtree AI, and a founding team member at the fintech startup Prattle, both of which successfully exited through acquisition. Prior to that, he worked as a freelance technology consultant. He has a history of board service, including as a committee member for the Board of Trustees of Washington University in St. Louis, and as an advisor for Balto and Mentor Collective. He holds a Ph.D., M.Phil., and Master’s from Columbia, and a Bachelor’s from Washington University in St. Louis. In his free time, Joe enjoys golf, tennis, and spending time with his family.
Academic Background
Dr. Joe Sutherland is Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Quantitative Theory & Methods (QTM) at Emory University, and a Fellow of the Weidenbaum Center on the Economy, Government, and Public Policy at Washington University in St. Louis. His research studying Congress, political behavior, and development economics is published in the American Political Science Review, Political Behavior, and Energy. In 2017, the National Science Foundation recognized his work in state politics and policy with Honorable Mention, considered a national honor. He has held research and teaching appointments at Columbia, Johns Hopkins, and Princeton.
